Choosing a clinician should not require decoding a wall of initials. A chiropractic degree, an active license and additional specialty training answer different questions. Here is how to tell them apart and check a credential for yourself.
What degree does a chiropractor earn?
A Doctor of Chiropractic earns a D.C. degree. The usual route includes at least three years of undergraduate education followed by a chiropractic program that typically takes four years. Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, with supervised clinical experience in assessment and chiropractic techniques. Individual educational paths vary. Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
A D.C. is a different qualification from an M.D. The degree identifies the profession; it does not mean that one clinician provides every kind of healthcare. Ask which clinician is appropriate for your particular concern, and how referrals will work if the findings point beyond chiropractic care.
Are chiropractors licensed or board certified?
The state issues the license to practice. The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners develops examinations whose results state licensing boards use when evaluating applicants. Passing those examinations is not a national license. The NBCE explains that distinction.
Additional postgraduate programs can lead to diplomate credentials in particular fields. Those are separate from the basic D.C. degree and state license. How to check a Tennessee chiropractor
The Tennessee Board of Chiropractic Examiners regulates chiropractic licensure in the state. Use the state's license verification service to search for the individual clinician. Compare the name, profession and license status with the person you intend to see.

When did chiropractic begin?
Palmer College dates D.D. Palmer's first chiropractic adjustment to 1895 in Davenport, Iowa, and the first classes of the Palmer School to 1897. Those are the dates in the college's historical account.
History explains how a profession developed. It is not evidence that a present-day treatment works for a particular condition. Stories about early chiropractic and hearing should not be used as a promise of hearing restoration.

- What are the likely benefits, limitations and risks of the proposed care?
- What alternatives should I consider, and what are their benefits?
- How will we measure progress and decide whether to continue?
- When would you recommend another clinician?
